It is recommended that most people see their dentist every six months for routine cleanings and checkups. For many of us, this is a simple task. However, if you have dental anxiety, this isn’t something that comes easy. If you are someone with some level of dental phobia, or there is another reason why you struggle to undergo dental treatment, oral conscious sedation could be the solution that you’ve been looking for. You may be a good candidate if you suffer from any of the following.

Dental Anxiety

The most common reason why people opt for oral conscious sedation is for their dental care. Approximately 9-15% of Americans avoid dental visits because they are nervous or fearful. If this applies to you, oral conscious sedation could be a great way for you to get the care you need. It is less intense than IV sedation but still relaxes you enough to get the care you need without the stress. You will remain awake and able to respond to your dentist’s instructions.

Increased Sensitivity

If you have gums or teeth that are especially sensitive, a normal dental visit may be more uncomfortable for you than the average person. This can be discouraging when it comes to routine dental care. This is where oral conscious sedation can play a role. Being sedated for your treatment reduces your ability to register pain, resulting in more comfortable treatment. If your dental visits are uncomfortable due to your sensitivity, let your dentist know. Oral conscious sedation may be a viable solution for you.

Overactive Gag Reflex

Even if you aren’t anxious about the idea or going to the dental office, this doesn’t mean that sedation is off the table. If you find that you gag easily and uncontrollably when your dentist is working on your teeth, oral conscious sedation may be able to help with this. This can be caused by different smells, tastes, and the presence of dental tools in the mouth. Oral conscious sedation can reduce the sensitivity of your gag reflex. In addition to making the experience more comfortable for you, it allows your dental team to work more quickly and efficiently.

Long Procedure

Even if you feel perfectly relaxed at the dental office, having a long, thorough treatment can still be uncomfortable. If you know that you have a long treatment coming up, oral conscious sedation may help you feel more comfortable over the course of your time in the dental chair.

There are many ways that patients can benefit from oral conscious sedation. If any of the things above apply to you, it may be worth talking to your dentist. This sedation method could be the solution to your dental woes!
